"The less we know, the more we think we know...The more we know, the more we realize we don't know shit."
It seems that everybody has a set of turntables and a computer set-up these days that allows them to sample and record with a fair level of production. They’re all emcees, turntablists or DJ’s now, even on the smallest of scales. But even as every Tom, Dick and Jerry are adding 'artist' before their names, there is clearly a large amount of hip-hop music out there that seems to miss the point.
As the world sinks into the whirlpool of hip-hop-pop worship, one man stands to break the ice. Ego HimSelf is that man. With a flow so out of this world, yet so focused on the world around him, he breaks the streak of sing along songs that are the mainstream of today’s hip-hop. His underground style is complemented with unique beats from The Logical, a beat chemist based in Albany, NY. The two were physically separate in location, but mentally together in the artistic process which made made this collaboration possible.
Ego Himself's album, “Halcyon Days” is one where a perceptive rebel creates his own bar to raise rather than live in the shadow of what has already been done. Blending his soul-searching grooves with a lyrical flow that emerges from a vision of the underground gone original. Delivering a richness of self-taught vocal acrobatics, a rhyme book of any other name would be recycled.
The end result is an album that weaves a tapestry of both groove and thought, while jumping outside the hip-hop food chain and leaving behind truly luscious landscapes that are not only artistic, but also relevant to the world around them.
